Back injuries are a big deal

On Behalf of | May 6, 2019 | Firm News, Workers' Compensation |

A job-related back injury can happen for a number of reasons. Regardless of how your injury occurred, a back injury can compromise your ability to do your job well, move without pain and continue in the same line of employment. Do not dismiss your back injury as something that will resolve itself over time, but secure the help you need to ensure you get necessary medical care and time to recover.

One the leading workplace injuries

Back injuries are one of the most commonly reported work injuries. While Minnesota workers employed in manual labor jobs or jobs that require heavy lifting are the most likely to suffer from this type of damage, it can happen to anyone. Statistics indicate that over one million people suffer from a work-related back injury every year. Accounting for one in five of all work injuries, back injuries can happen for the following reasons:

  • Extended time sitting or standing
  • Lifting heavy objects
  • Transferring heavy items
  • Holding heavy items

Lifting is the most common reason for back injuries, but some of the most painful damage is not the result of a one-time incident, but rather develops over time due to repetitive strain on the back.

Who is at risk?

Any worker is at risk for a back injury, but those who lift objects as part of their jobs are at a higher risk. It is quite common for individuals employed in the following industries and areas to suffer from back injuries:

  • Health care workers
  • Construction
  • Delivery service
  • Skilled labor
  • Assembly

Studies indicate that the number of these types of injuries can be greatly reduced with safety training, back braces, certain gear to help with lifting and other preventative measures. However, there is no way to completely eliminate the risk of a back injury, and even a simple fall or minor accident in the office can lead to a painful back injury, herniated disk, muscle strain and more.

Getting the money you need for a full recovery

If you injured your back at work, seeking the medical care you need is most likely your first priority. As soon as possible after the fall, you will need to notify your employer, and if you have a valid claim, you may begin the process of applying for workers’ compensation benefits.

The workers’ compensation insurance system is complex, and it can be difficult to navigate after a denial or delayed claim. Fortunately, you do not have to walk through this process alone, but you can turn to an experienced lawyer for knowledgeable advocacy of your interests and a higher chance of getting your rightful benefits in a timely manner.
